First Blog Entry in a Long Time

The art of keeping a personal website up to date.

This is my first entry in a while. A long while. That could be why the title is lackluster.

I’ve blogged off and on in on form or another, since 1998. They were dreadful, incoherent, and non sequitur. I tended to write about my aspiring music career, how poorly I was doing with my first year university coursework, and crushes. I did not record a single song, and DJ’ed a single gig. I do hope those posts never resurface.

Some of the iterations were better than others, but there has been a gamut of software and technologies that powered them. I’ve tried Wordpress, Drupal, Movable Type, homemade PHP templates, homemade PHP CMS sites and there are a couple more I’m forgtting. Most of the old sites were lost or had the files preserved with the requsite database content missing.

I want to do better—not with preserving angsty content. I want to write more. That is, I suppose, how to improve.

I’ve spent the past several days figuring out Hugo. This is about the third go at trying to understand it but I feel like I finally got the hang of it. It’s amazing to me that a static site generator can generate sites so wildly complex. I used a design someone else made and adapted it. The part of Hugo which took the most time to figure out was how it organized its data.

There are still a few quirks with some of the pages, which I intend to fix. I hope to write about crusing, my homelab, software projects and other daily thoughts. Hopefully someone will find the content interesting. Perhaps more interesting than my own angsty rantings from twenty plus years ago.
